THE parishes of West Overton and Fyfield will this weekend celebrate the life of a woman who died 200 years ago and is remembered only for her beautiful name.

Lettice Sweetapple was a spinster of West Overton who was buried at the village church on August 5 1805.

Dr Sue Rogers, the secretary of the Fyfield and West Overton Landscape Group, said: "She emerges from anonymity simply because she owned some land and her eye-catching name stood out in a list of landowners attached to a map of West Overton in 1794."

A report produced in 1998, telling the story of some 10,000 years of change in landscape evolution in the area, was called The Land of Lettice Sweetapple and, in thanks to the lady in question, a short service of commemoration will be held in the church at 7pm tomorrow as part of a weekend of events.

An display by the landscape group will open in Kennet Valley Hall at 7.30pm and it will be followed by a lecture by Professor Peter Fowler.

Saturday and Sunday see a choice of walks and a family ramble.

Participation is only for people who have booked through Dr Rogers by email at candsrogers@btinternet.com
