GAZETTE & HERALD: CHILDREN in Calne are being kept entertained over the holidays at the Summer Fun in Calne play scheme.

Every weekday for four weeks, 70 to 80 children aged five to 13 take part in various activities. The scheme, which is in its ninth year, started at St Dunstan School last week and will move on to Priestley Grove Youth Centre on Monday for two weeks.

Derek Quinn, a member of the organising committee, said: "There is a whole range of arts and crafts, along with sports and other games. You name it and we're doing it. It gives the kids a break from their parents for a few hours a day."

There are a number of specialists visiting throughout the four weeks, putting on displays such as sculpting, origami and small creatures.

The scheme, which costs £9,000 to put on every year, is supported by a £3,000 grant from Calne Town Council as well as money from Children In Need, which allows organisers to hire two members of staff to work with children with additional needs.

The scheme runs on weekdays from 10.30am to 2.30pm until August 19, costing £1 a session. Weather permitting, there are ten drop-in places available each day.
