DEVIZES MP Michael Ancram says he will continue to fight plans by the European Union to ban certain health supplements.

Mr Ancram dropped in at the Holland & Barrett health store in The Brittox, Devizes, on Thursday.

Holland & Barrett is among retailers fighting the changes which would result in around 200 supplements being axed and restrictions put on upper limits of vitamins doses.

Under the EU Food Supplements Directive, due to come into effect in August, supplements will only be able to include vitamins and minerals taken from an approved list.

But manufacturers of products already on the market will have until the end of 2009 to change any of the banned ingredients.

Mr Ancram said the issue was one he had received a large number of letters on from constituents.

He said: "I have been fighting this proposal all along. I am very strongly against being told by Brussels what health supplements we can and cannot take. This is a matter on which people should be able to make their own judgement, subject to any specific advice given to them."

Holland & Barrett store manager June Sweeting said: "A lot of our customers are unhappy about the changes and have written to Michael Ancram. The concern is that if customers are unable to get the quantities or strengths of supplements they require they could go on to the Internet and order them where they can't get advice."
