Pupils from Southbroom Junior School go through their paces at the Devizes primary music summer school (16891/13)YOUNGSTERS enjoyed making music during the Devizes Music Summer School. About 50 year five and six primary school children attended the week's event at Southbroom Junior School.

The summer school is in its 27th year and Michael Oliver, the organiser and music teacher, said it remains popular although fewer children attended this year, largely due to it clashing with Camp Xtra, the summer activity event run at Devizes School.

Mr Oliver said: "Last year Camp Xtra was in August but this year it was moved and it coincided with the music summer school.

"We know of a few youngsters who were intending to come to the music summer school but instead went to Camp Xtra.

"The aim of the music summer school is to give young children the chance to join together to make music and enjoy themselves."

About a dozen children had no musical experience and some played the recorder for the first time.

There was a try an instrument session and the youngsters played violin, cello, flute, clarinet, oboe, trumpet, trombone and other instruments.

The young musicians did instrumental, singing and orchestral work under the tutelage of Mr Oliver and seven other teachers.

On the final day they performed at a concert attended by 150 parents and friends.
