HUNDREDS of runners have signed up to take part in this year's Swindon half marathon.

Organisers of the race, which is sponsored by the Advertiser and Nationwide building society, are confident that more runners will be taking part in this year's marathon than last year, when it took place for the first time.

Race director Steve Connolly said: "I'm fairly confident that we'll be up on last year.

"Last year 1,250 took part.

"So far 370 people are registered this year and another 80 still need to be put on the system.

"Given that there is still about two and a half months to go we should top last year's figures." Steve puts this year's success down to good organisation and planning.

"I think it's because we got our act together earlier this time.

"The entry forms were sent out sooner and we have a really great website thanks to the Adver."

According to Steve a large proportion of those taking part in the race this year are from outside Swindon.

"There are people registering from all over the country.

"I think part of the race's appeal is the fact that it takes place in really pleasant surroundings and the runners can take in the scenery on the way."

The 13-mile race starts and finishes at Nationwide's headquarters at Pipers Way.

Steve admits it is not for the faint-hearted. "It is quite tough but we like to call it a challenge.

"The countryside route is scenic but there are some quite steep hillclimbs on the way.

"You could never call it a fast course. It is undulating and challenging and there are some good views as you go around."

All the money raised will go to the Prospect Hospice.

The money will be raised through the entry fee and through sponsorship.

The entry free varies from £11.50 to £13 depending on whether the runner is affiliated to a club. To take part log onto www.swindonhalfmarathon.co.uk

There are registration forms at sports and leisure centres across Swindon.
