WITH reference to your recent article which highlighted government cuts to adult learning, in May, the Learning and Skills Council notified colleges of cuts of around £140m to adult learning budgets, forcing colleges across the country to cut up to 200,000 places this year on vocational courses, with more severe cuts predicted for 2006.
The government says that this is because such funds as are available should go to 16-18 year olds and adults with low level skills.
The fourth largest economy in the world should not pose a choice between teenagers and adults. While there can be no quarrel with the government's desire to encourage employers to invest more in training, it is vital that we maintain access to learning for all those in whom their employer will not invest as well as the millions of people without an employer.
