ALEX Gidman and Steve Adshead led a Gloucestershire revival at Cheltenham to ensure their match against Hampshire remains evenly balanced.

Gidman's 115 was his third first-class century in the past month, while Adshead made 73 as Gloucestershire rallied from 142 for five before being bowled out for 363.

Hampshire, with a first-innings advantage of 22 in the Frizzell County Championship Division One match, then lost Chris Benham lbw to Jon Lewis as they closed on 21 for one in their second innings.

A strange twist to the day was that Hampshire's most successful bowler, James Bruce, was retired from the rest of the match at 12.08pm.

That decision allowed Chris Tremlett to play following his release from the England squad at Edgbaston.

By the time Tremlett took over, Bruce had added the dismissals of Ramnaresh Sarwan and Philip Weston to his capture of Steve Kirby's wicket earlier in the home side's innings.

Bruce finished with three for 42 in 12 overs, which equalled the career best he took against Glamorgan at Southampton three years ago.

It was not such a good day for Tremlett. He went for 14 runs in his first over and, although he bowled Matt Windows shortly afterwards, he finished with a return of one for 60 in 11 overs.
