The Duke of Westminster sees the funny side as he walks around the showground with Mike Williams, president of the Wessex Association of Chambers of Commerce (17367/10)WEST WILTS SHOW 2005: THE ninth annual West Wilts Show got off to a spectacular start with a colourful parade and a grand opening ceremony led by a very jovial Duke of Westminster.

The Duke toured the event, taking time out to chat to ex-servicemen and cadets as well as many others involved in the show.

He said: "After 30 years in public life I have never encountered a community show such as this. It is a real community event and everyone involved should be congratulated."

Taking part in the parade, led by Trowbridge town crier Trevor Heeks, were the mayors of all five west Wiltshire towns, army cadets, majorettes and members of the Royal British Legion and other veteran groups.

The parade, held for the first time at this year's show, kicked off a three-day extravaganza of music, entertainment and showcasing of the best the district has to offer.

From sampling cuisine from the different cultures represented in the area, to listening to the music produced by the best in local talent, there was something for everyone at the show.

Mike Williams, chairman of the show's steering committee, said: "It is difficult to say this was the best show ever but, in terms of organisation and numbers, we certainly have not had a better one.

"It was a tremendous success and we look forward to 2007."

The Wiltshire Times was the main sponsor of this year's show and editor Andy Sambidge said: "The show was a great success and the Wiltshire Times is proud to have been involved."

An estimated 100,000 people came along to the free show, organised by West Wiltshire District Council, and enjoyed the family entertainment on offer, including face painting, arts and crafts, refreshments, children's games and displays from circus skills to gymnastics.

Music was played throughout the afternoons and evenings of the show, with performers ranging from 80's legend Midge Ure to local groups just starting out.

Marc Bendell, from Trowbridge-based Eight72 Promotions, which arranged the musical side of the event, said: "We would like to congratulate all artists involved in the West Wilts Show 2005. We would also like to thank the people of west Wilts for turning out in their thousands in support of live music."

The show was also a chance for businesses and charities from around the area to let people know about their work.

One new showgoer was Ardy the Aardvark, the larger than life mascot of Trowbridge's Arc Theatre, who proved a great hit with children.
