Audrey GriffithsA PENSIONER who abseiled down a 90ft cliff has raised more than £1,000 for charity. Audrey Griffiths, 68, of Longfield Road, Trowbridge, took the plunge to help the Children's Hospice South West raise £15m for a new care home.

Mrs Griffiths, whose younger sister died of leukaemia when she was a child, was keen to help and raised £1,105 for the hospice.

She said: "It was a bit scary going over the edge.

"I was really nervous and I said I can't do it but the instructor told me, 'you can and you will'.

"I have thought of something that I might do next year for my 70th birthday but I'm keeping it secret at the moment."

Mrs Griffiths' friend, Fred Marriatt, 71, joined her in the abseil at Wookey Hole.

The Children's Hospice was set up in 1995 to care for children who suffer from life-limiting and life-threatening conditions.

There are over 800 children with life-limiting and threatening conditions in the South West, which bosses say is too many for one centre to cope with.
