Spanish dancing, buying ice cream in Italian and surfing in German were just some of the activities in which over 100 Year 6 pupils in Calne participated last week.

The 120 students visited John Bentley School to take part in International Day and learn about countries, languages and traditions.

Joining the primary school students were a small group of Year 7 pupils who missed out on the opportunity last year because of the snow.

Modern foreign languages teacher Nicola Cobbold said the day was a huge success and the children particularly enjoyed the different methods of learning foreign languages.

She said: “The day went very well and the pupils were enthused about learning new languages and about different cultures.”

During the day, the pupils were taught seven different languages from Spanish to Dutch Afrikaans by the Bath University PGCE teachers.

Ms Cobbold added: “The activities ranged from learning to surf in German, traditional Spanish dancing, buying ice creams in Italian and learning the names of wild animals in Dutch-Afrikaans.”
