Morrissey collapses on stage in Wiltshire

Singer Morrissey was rushed by ambulance to the Great Western Hospital tonight after he collapsed on stage just one song into a gig at The Oasis in Swindon.

The Gazette understands that an initial 999 call reported the 50-year-old former Smiths frontman was unconscious but he was conscious when the ambulance crew arrived at the leisure centre. His condition is said to be stable.

Morrissey, wearing a dark open-necked shirt, had appeared on stage at around 9pm looking drawn.

He said to the 1,000-strong audience: "Good evening... possibly," before launching into The Smiths' 1983 hit This Charming Man.

He appeared to be straining to perform the song, wincing as he did so.

Just as he came to the end of the song his knees buckled and he slumped to the stage. Assistant tour manager Charlie Browne and a stage hand rushed to his side and dragged him off stage. He was immediately followed off by his backing band and singers. The stage lights went up, to cat calls and whistles from the audience.

After ten minutes of silence a stage hand came to the microphone at the centre of the stage. "We will keep you informed what's happening," he said.

It was another 25 minutes before a second black-clad stage hand came to the same microphone. "Morrissey has left the building," he said.

"Please keep your tickets and you can get a refund or come again if there are more dates."

He was met with boos and more catcalls from some sections of the audience.

"He is seriously ill," the announcer added.

Bizarrely, as the auditorium lights came up, the crowd filed towards the exits and the stage crew began clearing instruments and amps from the stage, Frank Sinatra's My Way was played over the pa.

Some fans were in tears as they asked stewards for news.

The singer, whose real name is Steven Patrick Morrissey, had been taken by ambulance to the Great Western Hospital.

A hospital spokesman said the singer had suffered breathing difficulties.

Great Western Hospital site manager Deborah Allen said: "Morrissey was brought in to the Accident and Emergency department this evening. He has been reviewed by the medical team. His condition is stable."

A spokesman for the Great Western Ambulance Service said: "We got a call at 9pm and were there two minutes later with a double-crewed ambulance.

"A paramedic checked him over and he was taken to the Great Western Hospital for further assessment.

Morrissey had to cancel dates in Bristol, London and Birmingham earlier this year because of a throat illness. He also stormed off stage in Norway in June because a beer bottle was thrown.

He left the stage at the Coachella Festival this summer after complaining about the smell from burger vans. He is a committed vegetarian.

I was there. Didn't see him collapse. It looked like they all walked off after the first song (although we were at the back). Then an announcement said they were trying to find out what happened. All very strange. I hope he's OK.

I was down the front, six feet from the stage and he looked pretty ill, very pale and drawn. Finished 'This Charming Man', turned away and his legs gave way. Sad for all those who made the effort to be there but it's clear that Morrissey is not at all well.

I thought the audience was for the most part very understanding.

After Morrissey collapsed like that, it didn't seem likely we'd be seeing him again, and to be honest it didn't seem all that important.

He's clearly not well, and he needs time to recover. Let's all hope he makes a full recovery quickly.

Was right at the barrier tonight. He collapsed right in front of me. At first i thought he'd gone down on one knee, but it quickly became apparent he couldn't get back to his feet. He then collapsed to the floor, knocking over his mic stand. So worried about him. Hope you're ok Morrissey.

I was there too. He didn't look drawn to me and he performed This Charming Man as blindingly as he as ever performed it (after announcing "Good evening...POSSIBLY" !!!). Please keep us updated. Extremely concerned.

Sky News is saying he is currently stable in hospital. Agree with pwotherspoon the audience was understanding (except perhaps one or two!). Some folk were crying. All very sad and yes I hope he gets better real soon.

I was one of those crying! So so sad. I've seen him twice before, but to get the chance to see him in my home town and i was so close. Wish i hadn't had a front row view of that though. Hope we get more information soon. Gutted and so worried.

I have just returned from seeing Moz at swindon. Morrissey was clearly unwell, I did notice that he was coughing and clutching at his chest and i did feel he didnt look to well. But he performed Charming Man perfectly. I am gutted that i did not get to see this truly gifted man. This is now the second time that he has been unwell and gigs were cancelled. For what its worth Moz i think you should do shorter tours and take sometime out they are clearly not suiting you. Wish you well Darling xx

I really hope he is OK. I was there and there wasn't much cat calling or booing. I thought the audience was very understanding and generally just stood about waiting to hear what was happening. I really hope he reschedules when he has made a full recovery. All the best Mozza we are thinking of you.

Back on stage Tuesday ""Fasten your seatbelts it's going to be a bumpy night," he declared, launching into the Smiths' hit This Charming Man.
That song had been the last one he played before collapsing with breathing difficulties on Saturday night.
In London, he pretended to faint again, before springing to his feet and declaring: "Thank you, Swindon!"

It's a Miracle!
