Despite being told by doctors he would never walk again after a horrific bike accident, pensioner Eddie Sedgemore has won a place in the record books for a mammoth charity cycle.

Mr Sedgemore, 67, who lives just outside Chippenham, has notched up his second Guinness World Record for travelling 1,912 miles on a electric bicycle around the UK.

He was told by doctors he would never walk again after being knocked off his bike by a car 27 years ago and spent a week in a coma and remained in hospital for a further five weeks.

But the sprightly pensioner, who completed the gruelling challenge to raise money for the British Heart Foundation, said he enjoyed every minute.

Mr Sedgemore started his 28-day challenge at Lands End and finally came to a rest in the town of Lowestoft in Sussex, the most easterly point of the United Kingdom, at the end of May.

He said: “It feels fantastic to have put in all of that effort on the ride, and to be rewarded with a brand new world record.

“It was a long journey and I faced some horrendous wind and rain along the way, but looking back now it was all worth it.

“I met some lovely people in all corners of the country, and I’m also pleased that I managed to raise some money for the British Heart Foundation.”

Mr Sedgemore, who still works as a street cleaner, used an X-Byke from Bath based company Powabyke on his mission.

The Powabyke X-Byke is an electric bike with 24 gears and weighs 23kg with the battery fitted. He had set a previous world record having travelled from Land’s End to John O’Groats on a push scooter.

He has also completed the London Marathon five times and the New York Marathon, raising hundreds of pounds for charities in the past.

His latest feat took him to every corner of the country.

Mr Sedgemore was approached by Powabyke managing director Nick Child as the ideal candidate to put the new Powabyke X-byke model through its paces.

He said: “We’re really proud of Eddie and his remarkable achievement.

“We had no doubt that our bikes were durable enough for this intensity of challenge, and we were delighted that Eddie decided to put an X-Byke through its paces.”

Mr Sedgemore will now appear in the next edition of the Guinness Book of Records, due out in time for Christmas.
