Designer Jeremy Nabarro is hoping to get all his electricity from a wind turbine he plans to build in his garden at his home in Sherston.

The 11 metre high turbine, should even create excess power to be sold back to the national grid.

Mr Nabarro, 62, who designs swimming pools, also has geothermal heating in his home.

The vertical axis design would be the first of its kind in North Wiltshire and he hopes to have it generating electricity by Christmas.

The vertical axis means the blades spin face upwards rather than more traditional side-on propellers used by horizontal axis wind turbines.

He said: “It is quite different from the more common propeller types and would be the first one in North Wiltshire.

Mr Nabarro is hopeful of getting planning permission from Wiltshire Council and says his turbine is much lower than the 25m high conventional ones.

“I am fortunate that the house is surrounded by high hedges and trees so no neighbours will be able to see it.

The equipment ranges in cost from £7,800 for a 1kw machine able to provide 90 per cent of a house’s electricity, to £36,800 for a 10kw turbine enough for nine houses.

In April Mr Nabarro’s daughter Nell appeared on Living TV’s Britain’s Next Top Model.
