Mum Katie Drake-Burrows has launched a campaign for a residents’ parking scheme after news that Wiltshire Council is to tighten up on parking in Marlborough town centre.

Mrs Drake-Burrows, 29, of Barn Street has huge difficulty in finding a place to park anywhere close to her home. She has a son Owen, 11, and daughter, Flora, 16 months.

But her problems will be made worse if the council’s proposals go ahead, including the extension of double yellow lines along Kelham Gardens, the only place locally she can park.

She said: “I appreciate how people living in Kelham Gardens feel with so many people parking up there, especially as some park very inconsiderately.

“But I don’t know what I am going to do when the new restrictions come in.

“I have been on the Green car park waiting list since we moved here three years ago and have yet to receive a permit. And even when my name does reach the top of the list I have to pay over £1,000 for the privilege.

“What we need is a proper residents’ parking scheme for the Green, Kelham Gardens and Ducks Meadow rather than the heavy handed introduction of double yellow lines.”

Mrs Drake-Burrows and her husband Jamie, a self-employed accountant currently commuting between Marlborough and Leicester, have considered moving. Mrs Drake-Burrows said: “The trouble is we love Marlborough and we would hate to move from here.”

She has contacted Val Compton, who last campaigned for residents’ parking three years ago before she got involved in fighting for Savernake Hospital.
