More than 40 people interested in tracing their family histories visited the new resource centre of the Wiltshire Family History Society based in Devizes.

The society moved to the centre, at the Bath Road Business Centre, earlier this year from a smaller town centre location.

The centre was opened by Wiltshire councillor, Brigadier Robert Hall, on Saturday and an open afternoon followed.

The centre has a computerised surname index with 1.5 million entries and a detailed map of Wiltshire parishes.

Jerry King, the society’s publicity officer, said: “Most visitors left well pleased and a welcome number of non-members said that they would join.”

The centre is open by appointment. Details are available from www.wilt shirefhs.co.uk
