The boater who fell to his death in the Kennet and Avon Canal at Wilcot on Saturday afternoon has been named as Army officer Malcolm McKinlay, aged 57, who lived on the broad beam barge, The Apple.

Lt Col McKinlay's body was found in the water between his boat and the bank by a walker from the Trowbridge area said police.

He was still holding on to the lead of his brown terrier dog, called Borda, who was unharmed.

Police say they are not treating his death as suspicious.

They are appealing for witnesses who might have seen him on Saturday wearing a blue jacket with brown shorts and carrying a green rucksack.

A police spokesman said: "We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen Mr McKinlay."

Lt Col McKinlay was based at Bulford Camp. He owned a Mini Cooper S and he was a founder member of the South Coast New Mini internet site for Mini enthusiasts.
