TOWN councillors in Chippenham have shunned proposals to increase their annual allowance.

At a private meeting held on Wednesday, councillors discussed a report commissioned by the Independent Remuneration Panel that recommended the council could increase their allowance from £500 per annum up to £1,342.

Councillors voted in their majority to keep the allowance at £500 and not to increase it.

The news comes after the council decided to hear the discussions concerning the increase in private, banning press and public from the meeting.
