Police have revealed that a quiet Wiltshire town has seen almost 100 crimes in two months, including knife crime, burglary, assault and criminal damage.

The latest Police.uk figures, which look at crime in Marlborough, show that 93 crimes were recorded in the town in January and February 2024.

Although this is minimal compared to much larger nearby towns like Swindon, crime has been an increasing concern for people in the area this year after a teenage boy was stabbed on Isbury Road, near Ducks Meadow, in November 2023.

Marlborough Town Council was presented with a police crime report breaking down the figures in a council meeting on March 25, 2024.

According to police records, the most common type of recorded crime in Marlborough is currently 'violence and sexual offences', and 24 offences of this kind were reported in February alone.

The month of February also saw 12 shoplifting offences and four public disorder incidents in the small town.

Other crimes reported in the area in just one month include criminal damage and arson, antisocial behaviour, theft, drugs, possession of weapons and vehicle crime.

"Despite its small population, Marlborough is the 62nd most dangerous overall out of Wiltshire's 272 towns, villages, and cities," said a spokesperson for CrimeRate.co.uk.

"However, in 2023 the overall crime rate in Marlborough was 53 crimes per 1,000 people.

"This compares favourably to Wiltshire's overall crime rate, coming in 5 per cent lower than the average Wiltshire rate of 56 per 1,000 daytime population."

According to Wiltshire Police, one of the main focuses in Marlborough this year has been tackling knife crime, following the stabbing of a 15-year-old boy on November 7, 2023.

The victim was rushed to hospital after a knife wound to the leg and a 17-year-old was later charged in connection to the incident.

Knife crime has continued to be an issue, as firearms officers and police dogs also discovered a bladed article while storming a property near Marlborough on March 8, 2024.

Since the stabbing, Wiltshire Police has carried out several community engagement events in Marlborough to try and combat this, including 'Blunt Truth', which encourages young people to report knife-related crime and highlights the dangers of carrying weapons.

Cracking down on speeding has also been a big focus for the small town.

"Speed enforcement has taken place on 18 occasions this year so far," said PC Steele from Wiltshire Police.

"123 drivers were offered speed awareness courses, 19 drivers issued with a fine and points on their license and 8 drivers reported to court for excess speed."
