A teenage girl has been arrested after a staff member at a busy Wiltshire supermarket was allegedly assaulted.

The girl, 13, was arrested on suspicion of theft and assault after police were called to Sainsbury’s in The Pippin, Calne, shortly after 7.30pm on Friday, February 16.

Officers said the girl “appeared intoxicated” when she was detained.

Police arrived on the scene after a young girl reportedly took items from the store and left without making any attempt to pay.

It is alleged that this girl then assaulted a member of staff as she left the scene.

After officers from Chippenham arrived, they detained a 13-year-old girl who was taken into custody in Swindon for questioning.

She was later released on bail.

PC Lizzie Wright, of the Calne Neighbourhood Team, said: “We have been working closely with our local retailers and Calne CCTV over the past few months where we have seen a reduction in anti-social behaviour in the town centre.

“This sort of behaviour towards retail staff will not be tolerated in Calne and we hope that the action taken by our officers during this incident shows our continual commitment to the reduction of crime and anti-social behaviour in the town.”
