A van driver was reported by police after a near miss while carrying out a “careless” overtake in a Wiltshire 30mph zone.

Officers from Wiltshire Police’s Roads Policing Unit (RPU) allegedly witnessed the large box van attempt a “careless” overtake on Herd Street in Marlborough.

Footage of the incident shows the vehicle narrowly avoid an oncoming car after overtaking the driver in front, reportedly breaking the 30mph speed limit.

Officers followed the van driver and pulled them over.

They were subsequently reported for the incident.

A spokesperson for the force said: “RPU witnessed this box van overtaking through the 30 limit in Marlborough with no view whatsoever and exceeding the speed limit.

“Driver reported for careless driving.”

The incident was reported by the Wiltshire Specialist Operations Twitter account, which provides updates on the force’s roads policing and armed response units.

RPU recently confirmed it will continue with Project Zero in 2024.

This operation is a day of action targeting what police call the fatal five, which includes drink and drug driving, speeding, using a mobile phone, and not wearing a seatbelt.
