One Wiltshire man is less than impressed after doorbell footage revealed that binmen had been carelessly throwing his recycling boxes across the street.

Greg Pilworth, who lives on Coleridge Close in Royal Wootton Bassett, told The Adver that he doesn't usually check his doorbell footage but on Monday, January 22, he came home to find a block that had been on his bin was smashed.

"I watched the video back after I got home from work to find the bin lid missing due to blowing away in the wind & the block I had placed on it smashed," he said.

"It was then that I saw what had happened. It's just a poor attitude."

Greg, who runs an independent specialist vehicle service centre near Malmesbury, believes that the throwing of bins and boxes is not just careless but is also likely the reason that his previous bin mysteriously broke.

"It annoyed me due to the complete disregard of my property and the council's bin which is paid for by the taxpayer," he added.

"Now the lid is gone, flown away in the wind probably broken into pieces ready to pollute the planet a bit more. So much for ‘recycling."

After sharing footage of the incident with his local community Facebook group, Greg quickly realised that he was not alone in his frustration.

"The way in which this staff member has handled their recycling box shows that they have little to no regard for someone's belongings," said community member Sarah Clarke.

"They threw the recycling box back down once they emptied it instead of putting it down nicely and also never even bothered to put the lid back on the box on they had emptied it."

"I don’t think there are many people in the area that have a non-broken black box, it’s disgusting how they treat them," added Susan Farrell.

Councillor Nick Holder, cabinet member for waste at Wiltshire Council, said, “We are disappointed to see the footage of a binman apparently mistreating a recycling box and apologise that the stone holding the lid down was broken.

"We have spoken to our contractors and asked them to investigate this incident and remind their staff of the standards expected of them when collecting waste from residents’ properties.

“We haven’t issued lids for black boxes since March 2020 as they are now used solely for glass, so there is no need to keep the contents dry and they were also prone to blowing away in strong winds.”
