Police are searching for two men after a dog was allegedly held down and beaten on a major Wiltshire road.

The alleged incident of animal cruelty reportedly took place at around 3.30pm on Boxing Day when two men were seen holding down the animal and beating it on the A4, between Beckhampton and Calne.

A member of the public challenged the men who are said to have claimed the dog was “acting up”.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Investigating officers have released an image of two people that they are hoping to identify in connection to their ongoing enquiries.

PC Laura Hughes said: “We take reports of this nature extremely seriously and are keen to speak to the two men involved and check on the welfare of the dog.”
