Motorists have been warned a main road through a Wiltshire town will close for several hours during a festive celebration.

The A4 New Road through Calne will shut at multiple points throughout Saturday, November 25, to allow the town’s Christmas Festival of Lights to go ahead safely.

The busy route will be closed from the junction with Station Road to its junction with Market Hill between 11am and 4pm.

From 4pm until 7pm the road will remain shut between the junctions with Station Road and Curzon Street.

Throughout the day Church Street will also be closed to vehicles, from the A4 to Mill Lane, while Cox Hill will be shut by the town hall.

The council warned that any drivers wilfully breaching this order could be slapped with a fine of up to £1,000.

Buses will be able to use New Road up until 1.20pm while exceptions will also be made for emergency vehicles.

The closures are in place due to the popularity of the festive event, which is expected to draw large crowds.

Visitors will be treated to a lantern parade, market stalls, musical performances, Santa’s grotto, and the Christmas lights switch on.

The procession will leave Bremhill View at 4.30pm and head into the town centre via North Street, Wood Street, Curzon Street, and The Strand.
