A4 police chase sees man arrested over 'hare coursing'

Police were alerted to a group of men spotted in fields just off the A361 at Cherhill, on the afternoon of Sunday, November 5, when members of the public reported potential hare coursing.

The men were allegedly seen in the fields with lurchers.

They then reportedly fled the scene by car at a “dangerous speed” when officers from the Rural Crime Team arrived.

Road Policing Units gave chase and stopped the vehicle on the A4, where the driver was arrested on suspicion of daytime trespass in the pursuit of game under Section 30 of the Game Act.

Two passengers were able to escape and were not located, despite searches being conducted by a dog unit, the Devizes response unit, and neighbourhood teams from both Devizes and Calne.

The driver was also reported for driving without insurance, and both the vehicle and two dogs have been seized by police.

Officers’ enquiries into the incident are still ongoing and they have urged anyone with information that could help the investigation to come forward.
