Marlborough Town Council has completed the planting of 70 trees to honour the reign of the late Queen.

The town council committed to planting one native tree for each year Queen Elizabeth II reigned, in June 2022, as part of their celebration of her Platinum Jubilee.

On February 2, it completed the planting of the final trees at Tin Pit while a plaque was unveiled in Priory Gardens to commemorate an oak tree planted by the mayor, Cllr Lisa Farrell, last year.

The plaque was donated by Claridge Funeral Service and read: “In celebration of the Platinum Jubilee, this oak tree has been donated by Brook and Sally Johnson in gratitude for the continuing and heartfelt Prayers offered up from St Mary’s Church for our Queen Elizabeth II and for all who live in and support Marlborough and its surrounding villages.”

The 70 trees will now be added to the official Queen’s Green Canopy map.

In addition to the copse of 40 trees at Tin Pit, six have been planted on Elcot Lane, 15 can be found at Stonebridge, seven are on Marlborough Common and the oak and a willow are in Priory Gardens.
