Work has begun on a new leisure area in Calne after plans were given the go ahead by the town council.

The recreation ground on Anchor Road is set for an upgrade after the town council’s amenities and facilities committee approved plans to convert the facility’s tennis courts into a multi-activity zone for families.

This will include a small paddle boat area, a coin operated car track, an inflatable play area and a crazy golf course.

A small orchard will also be planted at the front of the dog walking area, to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III.

Director of council services Steve Nash, said: “This will be great for families in Calne with a range of activities on offer and welfare facilities which will allow them to stay all day at the Rec.”

Cllr Declan Boore, the chairman of the amenities and facilities committee, added: “The upgrade to Calne’s Recreation Ground is a wonderful project to be involved with as it will bring brand new facilities for residents and their families, as well as visitors to Calne, to enjoy for many generations to come.”

The leisure area is set to be completed by the spring while plans to convert the existing council depot into a public toilet and cafe have also been given the green light.
