The Liberal Democrats have broken the Conservative stranglehold on Wootton Bassett.

Candidate Jenny Stratton was elected onto the council in the early hours of this morning.

She said: "I am reeling from the experience, I am still shaking at the moment, but I am very pleased."

Jenny won by 433 votes compared to opponent independent candidate Mark Hopkins' 258.

She will now begin her duties as ward councillor for Wootton Bassett North.

The new councillor, of Sheridan Drive, has served as a district councillor between 1987 and 2003 and a town councillor from 1986 to 1999.

She is also chairwoman of the Wootton Bassett branch of the Wiltshire Berkshire Canal Trust.

The Tories have dominated Wootton Bassett Town Council after gaining all 16 seats during the May elections.

But just weeks afterwards, Coun Josephine Linton resigned from her post because of health problems, leaving a vacancy.

Jenny will be the only Lib Dem Councillor on the all-Tory council and will be meeting with the town clerk next week top discuss her role.
