More than 60 entries in Pewsey's fancy dress Wine Race and hardly two the same..that's what you call inventiveness.

Teams of three have their legs tied together to make it a four legged race around the village with one team member having to drink a glass of wine and each of six stops.

A huge crowd turned out tonight to watch the spectacle which is a precursor of next Thursday's Wheelbeero Race - that usually attracts around 200 entries - and the illuminated carnival procession on Saturday September 22.

Hundreds of people gathered in the centre of the village tonight to see the teams gather for the start.

The race was originally dreamt up by Tony Kimber about 20 years ago but he has since passed the organisation to David Major to concentrate on the Wheelbeero race.

Mr Major said he was delighted with the standard of the entries, the sheer variety of the fancy dress themes and that last year's entry of 64 was equalled.

Mr Major said: "There has been a brilliant turn out again with some great themes.

"I don't suppose there is another village in the country that can ran an event like this and get the support that Pewsey gets."

The Simpsons rubbed shoulders with the Hot Fuzz and three Pavarotti look-alikes ran together with "RIP Pav" on their backs.

There were traditional fancy dress subjects like cowboys and Indians competing alongside hula boys in grass skirts and Bush Tucker men and women.

Sarah Smart, Niki Young and Sharon Smith went along dressed in top hat and tails as The Three Tenners decorated with enlarged £10 notes.

There was even a narrow boat crewed by Lois Sunderland, Sharyn Northcliff and Caroline Lewis.

Geisha Girls ran alongside nuns, Madam Butterflies, air hostesses and skeletons.

None of the entries was too outrageous and it was a night of family fun.

The silver plate award for the best fancy dress went to the Amy Winerace Rehab team of Debbie Britten, Tim Brook and Paula Mason.

Full results will appear in the Gazette and Herald on Thursday September 19.
