Ex-international rugby stars are set to play in Box to raise some desperately needed funds for the Green Room youth club.

The match is taking place at the recreation ground on Sunday from 2.30pm and is the brainchild of former Bath player Chris Lilley, who is now landlord at The Bear pub.

The Box Hooters' will take on the Colerne Donkeys' and the teams will include some top names including Richard Lee, John Hall, Steve Ojomo, Richard Hill and Greg Bess.

As well as the chance to see some great rugby stars of the past in action, there will also be music, children's games, a bar and a hog roast.

The organisers are hoping that the day will raise around £1,000 which is desperately needed to help with the costs of running the popular youth club.

Chris Lilley said: "It will be the first game of rugby that has ever taken place in Box.

"It is all about facilities for the village."

Sally Higham, club co-ordinator at the Green Room youth club said: "People think there isn't a need.

"It is frustrating that people don't understand that young people need a space."

Mrs Higham is hoping that when there is eventually enough money to build a new pavilion in Box it will give the youth club a new lease of life.

She said: "We could make a real use out of this.

"It's not just the sports club and the bowls it is for all the rest of us. The youth club has 80 members. That should justify it.

"It is a real opportunity for young people. The village are really behind the young people on the whole. The kids are great but they need this space."

The youth club entertains around 40 young people aged between 11-17 every Wednesday evening and have been meeting at the Selwyn Hall.

Mrs Higham added: "We get the odd bit in donations but what we really need is a big push to get some funds together."

Programmes for the rugby match are available at £2 from the Stop Press shop in Box and will act as tickets, or donations will be asked for on the day.
