ENDURANCE athletes cheered a man as he proposed to his wife after she had walked 100km along the Ridgeway during the Dixons Carphone Race to the Stones.

The couple shared the romantic moment among the Avebury stones as 2,500 others crossed the finish line.

Adam, 31 travelled all the way form Perth to surprise his girl friend Kristen at the finish line and said: "The preparation started way back in April while I was in London for work. I knew I wanted to marry her, I had my own idea for a proposal but I knew that she dreamed of being proposed to at the end of a race.

"The whole thing went a lot better than I could have ever imagined! There were a few things that needed to align to make it so special.

"Firstly she didn’t know I was there – she thought I was at home in Scotland. I even went out with a friend on the Friday at home to take photos, which I sent on the Saturday evening to make her think I was out at home while in fact I was in a hotel room in Bath. When she called I had to make sure I wasn't in a place that would give me away either, all very stressful!

"On the Saturday she ran ahead of Kirstie, so her running partners and I kept sending numerous texts to stop her doing that on the Sunday. It obviously, and thankfully, worked!

"Thirdly, I had no idea what would happen at the finish team, but the PR team and I ran through a few options and the best one came from Nigel on the Mic. A quick rehearsal prior to Kristen's arrival allowed for a flawless execution. I was not expecting to have that level of service / engagement from everyone: The Race to the Stones team went the extra mile and were phenomenal!"

Kristen Allcoat, 30 said: "I got to about 98km and emotion took over. I wanted to give up and started crying. I knew I only had 2km to go but it seemed impossible - even though I had got this far.

"My friends Sara and Kirstie kept telling me that I had a short bit to go and the feeling at the finish line would be worth it. I really had no idea what was waiting for me. I hugged my friend Jenny who was waiting at the finish line and sobbed.

"Then someone whisked me around and I saw Adam on one knee with a ring. I'm not joking when I did question myself if this was really happening or if I had perhaps collapsed during the race and I was dreaming it all. I couldn't move so poor Adam had to come to me and crouch back down. Although there were lots of people there watching it like it was Adam and me in that moment.

"It was the best moment of my life and one I won't ever forget."

Emotional racers finished the run, having begun in The Chilterns in Oxfordshire and run across the length of the Ridgeway.

Nick Tuppen, CEO of Threshold Sports, which organises Dixons Carphone Race to the Stones, said: “It was a fantastic weekend. There was a record turnout despite the World Cup, Wimbledon and the weather. People took part from as far afield as Nepal, New Zealand and Nigeria. There were inspirational stories throughout from the winner to the guy who proposed to his wife after she walked the trail.”
