PUPILS from Sheldon School in Chippenham have received a letter of thanks from human rights activist Desmond Tutu after he was ‘deeply touched’ by their work.

Year 9 pupils in their PSRE lessons were exploring the life and achievements of Archbishop Tutu under the theme of justice, love and equality, and were set the challenge of created letters and art inspired by his work.

Personal, Social and RE teacher Eleanor Besley was so proud of the work they had done she felt she had to share some of it with Tutu himself, and the school has now received a letter of thanks from his office.

She said: “What a joy to know that the letters and artwork had been so appreciated by him.The pupils are a fantastic credit to the school and everyone here knows that this acknowledgement is something they will treasure forever.”

Rev The letter, from Tutu’s PA wrote: personal assistant, said: “His Grace says Thank You to each of the children. He has asked that I please write to say “Thank YOU” for your letter, as well as to each of the children who contributed their artwork and thoughts with him. “He was most charmed and deeply touched.”

“Congratulations to you Ms Besley, for having initiated a project whereby your students had an opportunity to reflect on tolerance and kindness towards others. Such insights gained, hold the promise of having a positive impact, not only on each child, but so too, for those whose orbit they move within.”

Year 9 pupil Kirsty, in year 9, said: “I was thrilled to find out that my work had been sent to Desmond Tutu and I felt very privileged that my work had been read by him.”

Year 9 pupil Jahrel said: “Desmond Tutu isn’t just a great person, he’s a role model. His hard work and dedication towards the abolition of the apartheid is something to be admired. He deserves all the praise he gets.”
