I PUBLISHED my estates strategy for policing earlier this year. It set out my intention to rationalise the police estate to enable further investment in mobile technology, modernisation of the sites we need and the protection of frontline services.
The financial pressures on Wiltshire Police are considerable, with a further £4m required to be found by 2020. I want to be assured that we are not spending money on buildings that could be spent on police officers and staff.
Wiltshire Police already shares sites with Wiltshire Council, Swindon Borough Council, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service and South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust. My strategy says we will seek to provide a more joined-up public service and to make more efficient use of public money.
Marlborough continues to be an important location for policing. However, the current Marlborough Police Station building is significantly larger than required and is not an efficient use of public money. As such I am exploring alternative sites in central Marlborough that will provide a touchdown point for the Community Policing Team and a public enquiry office.
We are still at an early stage of identifying suitable sites and I do not wish to prejudice any commercial discussions by disclosing the locations.
I am confident that we can identify a site that is highly visible, centrally located and suitable to ensure policing in Marlborough is unaffected. No changes to the existing site will be made until a suitable alternative is in place. My office will continue to liaise with Marlborough Town Council and we work together to keep Marlborough safe.
