VILLAGERS from West Lavington and Littleton Panell were out in force on Saturday to take part in the Great British Spring Clean.
Parish council chairman Sandra Gamble was delighted with the community spirit shown as people washed, swept and litter picked their way around the villages.
She said: "The Great British Spring Clean exemplified the pride Littleton Panell and West Lavington feel in our neighbourhood. It is becoming a tradition following on from last year’s Clean for the Queen.
"Most of the 64 bags of rubbish collected consisted of leaves and roadside debris but there were sadly still signs of the litter problem, cans smashed wantonly into drainage grates, bottles discarded or crushed and torn up remnants of sweet wrappers. On a positive and welcome note, only one pile of dog poo was found on the playing fields."
People washed signs, swept bus shelters and polished the red telephone kiosk. Equipment was provided by Wiltshire Council, the youth club was used as a meeting point and the twinning association ran Cafe Continental in the village hall.
