CHILDREN at St Mary’s Primary School in Chippenham had the chance to question their local MP after she visited the school last week.

Chippenham MP Michelle Donelan spoke to the whole school and took questions for 45 minutes on what life was like as an MP, why she became one and her background during her visit on Friday (February 10).

She said: “I believe it is a vital part of an MPs job to visit schools, especially at a time when we are campaigning together to make the funding for Wiltshire schools fairer.

“I committed to visit each school in my constituency within the first two years as an MP and I am on course to do so.

“The assembly at St Mary’s was hugely enjoyable, the children asked about their local community and what they want, how democracy works, the role of an MP, parliament and how you become an MP.

“I think it is important for MPs visit schools to talk about democracy and try to engage children to take an interest in politics by explaining how it can and does impact on their lives and communities.”

Miss Donelan also visited Lacock and Ivy lane Primary School on the same day as part of her commitment to visit all schools in her constituency.

“We were very pleased to welcome Michelle Donelan,” said headteacher of St Mary’s Primary School, Sarah Wembridge.

“I’m sure all the children learnt a lot about the life of an MP and hopefully she has inspired some of our children to follow in her footsteps.”
