The daughters of inspirational Devizes campaigner Chris Carver are running in her memory.

Clare and Beth Carver, aged 20 and 18, are running the Race for Life in Reading in memory of their mother who died on February 2 after losing her battle against cancer.

Mrs Carver, who was 53, was well known in Devizes and respected for her tireless campaigning on environmental issues and fighting housing development.

Mrs Carver, of Addington Close, Devizes, had been in remission from breast cancer for six years but the cancer returned in 2004.

In April Mrs Carver was given a posthumous civic award by Devizes Town Council for her campaigns.

Beth and her twin brother Matthew and Mrs Carver's husband Steve attended the ceremony.

Clare and Beth are appealing for people to sponsor them in the Race for Life.

The money raised will go to the charity Cancer Research UK.

Clare, who is studying for a psychology degree at the University of Reading, said: "We all really miss mum.

"We thought it would be really nice to do something in her memory and raise money to hopefully prevent cancer happening to other people."

It was Beth's idea to take part in the Race for Life even though she herself is not sporty.

Beth, who works in a clothes shop in Swindon, said: "I will probably have to walk most of it because I am not a good runner!"

Beth has joined the gym at Devizes Leisure Centre to help her train for the five kilometre race.

She said: "I think mum would find it funny that we are running but she would perhaps be quite proud of us as well."

The girls, who both attended St John's School in Marlborough and Bishops Cannings Primary School, say they were overwhelmed by the number of people who attended their mother's funeral and who wrote in a tribute book which the family are keeping.

Clare Carver said: "There were lots of people at mum's funeral who may well like to sponsor us but for whom I do not have e-mail addresses.

"We know that she is missed by many people."

To sponsor the girls go to www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/bethandclare They have almost reached their initial target of £750 and they are now planning to raise as much as possible for Cancer Research UK.

The women are taking part in the race at Prospect Park in Reading on July 15.
