AN urgent investigation has been launched by police after a woman was sexually assaulted in Chippenham this morning.

The incident happened at 1am as the victim, aged in her 20s, was walking in the area of Downing Street and Canterbury Street when she was pulled into an alleyway by her attacker.

The man, described as white but tanned and spoke with an English accent who was wearing a dark coat and white trainers, sexually assaulted her before running off in the direction of Sheldon Road.

Detective inspector Simon Pope, of Melksham CID said: “We take reports of this nature extremely seriously.

“This was a nasty attack, which has left the victim extremely shaken and understandably upset.

“She is being supported by our specialist Sexual Offence Liaison Officers.

“I would like to reassure members of the public in Chippenham that we have a team of detectives carrying out a thorough investigation into this matter and as a result, there will be an increased police presence in the area while we try to establish the circumstances around the incident.

“I would like to appeal to anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in that area at the time or anyone who may have information which could help with the enquiry, to please get in touch immediately via 101. Information can also be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
