TWO of the most advanced aircrafts in the world flew over Wiltshire last night witnessed by hundreds of people relaxing in their gardens.

The two B2 Spirit stealth bombers flew across at around 8pm coming in from the west across Frome into the Trowbridge area, following the route of the canal.

They were heading for RAF Fairford in Gloucester. The planes were also spotted over Chippenham and Malmesbury.

Householder Rob Hopkins watched the aircraft as they flew over the Broadmead estate. He said: "It was unbelievable. Suddenly they were overhead and easily visible. You didn’t expect to see them as you sat in the garden."

Peter Tilley was outside tending to his garden when he watched the bombers fly over. He said: "They seemed to be flying at a relatively low level for a stealth aircraft as if they were descending in preparation for landing. It was quite a sight to see."

Stealth aircraft are designed to avoid detection using a variety of stealth technologies that reduce reflection/emission of radar, radio-frequency spectrum, and audio, collectively known as stealth technology.

The bombers traveled from Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, to the UK, with both active duty and Air National Guard Airmen from the 509th and 131st Bomb Wings to validate the vital importance of the British airbase in projecting Washington’s strategic bomber force across the world.

They carried out a 'hot pit' refuelling and crew change test at RAF Fairford.

“Conducting the hot-pit refueling at RAF Fairford showcased the capability of the aircraft to forward deploy and deliver conventional and nuclear anytime and anywhere,” said a US Air Forcespokesman.

The tests took place while three B-52 Stratofortresses from Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota are deployed to RAF Fairford to take part in multinational Exercises BALTOPS 15 and SABER STRIKE 15, two annual exercises held over international waters in the Baltic Sea and the territory of the Baltic states and Poland.

“Participation of B-52s in Exercises BALTOPS and SABER STRIKE demonstrates our nation’s steadfast commitment to promoting regional stability and security, fostering cooperation and increasing interoperability as we work alongside our allies toward mutual goals,” said Admiral Cecil D Haney, US Strategic Command commander.
