IT was like father, like son at the Walter George 10K in Calne on Sunday.
Phil Kibble, 41, from Victoria Cottages in New Zealand, near Lyneham, won in 33 minutes 50 seconds. It proved a successful day for the Kibble family, as, with mum Carol watching from the sidelines, eight-year-old Peter finished fourth in the one mile fun run.
"I finished and he came running up to me and telling me he'd finished fourth, so it was a good day," said Kibble, who was running for Wiltshire Police.
"It was quite a fast course through the first five kilometres because you had a clear run but then you turn back and with all the volume of people you haven't got a free passage.
"I led from start to finish. My plan was to run hard and then fight it out for whoever ran with me.
"I got a good lead and it was a relaxed run on the way back, though I was checking behind me now and again."
Kibble finished ahead of Brian Penny, City of Bath AC (34:21) and Nick Frost, Pontypridd Roadents, (34:26).
Victoria Plummer of Frome AC was the first female home in 41:44, while the overall winner of the fun run was Madeleine Perrins, from Hilmarton, Calne.
The race was in memory of Walter Goodall George who was born in Calne. He is remembered as one of England's greatest runners of the 19th century, holding world records at all distances from one mile to one hour runs.
It was organised to raise money for Calne Town Council's Beversbrook sports facilities project.
"It was a nice traffic free course and hats off to the organisers because we need more races and without them there wouldn't be any events," added Kibble.
Organisers Tri-active Sports hope to make this an annual event and their next race is a 5km summer series to be held at Stanley Park, Chippenham.
