SINGING teacher Penny Price-Jones is doing a sponsored walk to help would-be teachers hit a high note.

Mrs Price-Jones, who is chairman of the Association of Teachers of Singing, will be combining two loves of her life when she walks the West Mendip Way from March 24 to 26.

For the keen hiker from Devizes will be giving singing workshop classes in Bristol, Glastonbury and Weston-super-Mare on the evenings of the 30 mile walk.

The association she chairs has launched a bursary called Songlines to help people who want to train as music teachers to mark its 40th anniversary.

Mrs Price Jones, 65, of Avon Road, said: " It has taken some training during the winter months to be ready for this.

But the 30 miles is nothing compared with a trek shed did along the Machu Picchu Trail for Macmillan Cancer Research in 2012.

She is hoping people will sponsor her to raise money for the bursaries. She said: "To mark our ruby anniversary I have spearheaded a development in our teacher training to cater for aspiring singing teachers who don't yet have the skills to start working with pupils.

"This is like an apprenticeship scheme, and we are already on our second cohort of students having started the first at the end of January.

"We are also launching a bursary to help these new teachers to fund themselves onto the teacher training course."
