FEARFUL residents in Mile Elm have lambasted the lack of action from Wiltshire Council regarding road safety on the A3102 near Calne, a year on from a fatal crash on the bend.

Members of the Mile Elm Speed Stoppers group are angry about the lack of action on the stretch of road since the death of 43-year-old mum of three Tracey Rooke on March 13, 2014.

Ms Rooke, from Worton, near Devizes, died when her Ford Fiesta collided with a 7.5 tonne lorry on the A3102 in Mile Elm between Sandy Lane and Calne.

An inquest into Ms Rooke’s death recorded an accident verdict in October with the coroner saying he would raise with Wiltshire Council why no action had been taken to improve safety on the road.

Chairman of the campaign group Sharon Burton, 49, lives near the scene of the accident and comforted Ms Rooke until the first paramedic arrived.

She said: “People need to be warned that this is a dangerous bend and people have lost their lives on it.

“It’s disgraceful nothing has been done. All they have had is meetings what will it take before have will be some action? Isn’t one lady's life enough? It defies logic.

“I think it’s disgusting that nothing has been done to signage at a notorious blind spot.”

An update from the Calne Area Transport group said the issue had been discussed at its meeting on January 27, reported to the Area Board on February 10 and that a sign review was imminent with a road marking survey for double white lines was booked for this week.

But Mrs Burton remains unconvinced by this response.

She said: “You would have to be an idiot to overtake on a blind bend; no-one has crashed because they are overtaking another vehicle.

“I think their response is unbelievable, the main reason people lose control is because they don’t slow down at the bend and they under-estimate how the tough the road is.”

A Wiltshire Council spokesperson said: “We are surveying the entire length of the A3102 from its junction with the A342 near Sandy Lane to Calne – this includes the section through Mile Elm. This work has started and any recommendations will be put in place.”

Claire D'Arcy, 43, also lives in Mile Elm and is a member of the campaign group.

She said: “The road is absolutely not safe and there’s no excuse for doing nothing.

"We see a huge number of accidents through here, not just the ones that are fatal, there are lots more accidents that are not reported on the accident statistics.

“I think reducing the speed limit would be a big help, it’s not a bend you can stay on at 50mph, let alone when there’s fog or ice. We really should be making this a 30 but Wiltshire Council won’t. They say there are not enough fatalities."
