FIREFIGHTERS say that a smoke alarm saved a woman’s life after she was pulled from a house fire this morning.

Wiltshire Fiore and Rescue were called to a bungalow in Wroughton in the early hours of Boxing Day after reports of a house fire which may have started in the lounge.

Crews from Swindon and Westlea attended the scene after they were called out to the property in Maunsell Way at around 3.59am on December 26.

They tackled the blaze with one hose reel jet and four breathing apparatus wearers, while a woman was pulled from the house and taken to hospital by the South West ambulance service.

Crews managed to extinguish the fire by 6.08am.

On Twitter, firefighters from Swindon fire station said that the woman’s working smoke alarm had saved her life.

In a string of messages shortly after the incident one firefighter said: “Just back from fire in bungalow in Wroughton with @FireWestlea, heavily smoke logged house, fire in living room, smoke alarm alerted owner.

“Owners life definitely saved by smoke alarm giving early warning of fire, we used. 4ba and 2 hose reels, with ppv to resolve incident.”

Although the exact cause of the fire has not yet been established the investigation team will establish the cause when they return after the bank holiday.
