A MEMORIAL wall which pays tribute to Wiltshire soldiers who died during the First World War is going on tour.

The display, made from 10,000 crosses by thousands of local schoolchildren, was put together for Remembrance Day this year.

Each cross displays the name of a local soldier who lost their life.

Wiltshire Council is looking for venues able to display sections of the wall when it is separated into parts representing north, south, east and west Wiltshire early next year.

Venues’ organisers are being asked if they would like to display part of the wall for at least four weeks, giving more people across the county an opportunity to see it and pay their respects.

The complete wall has been on display in Marlborough, Devizes and Salisbury, most recently at Salisbury Cathedral.

Wiltshire Council leader Jane Scott said: “It has always been our wish for as many people as possible to see this special memorial display and we’re sure many venues across the county will be pleased and proud to host it.

“We have had some lovely comments from people who have visited the display and it serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those brave soldiers 100 years ago.”

Roger and Pauline Smith, who visited the wall in Marlborough, said: “We want to say how impressed we were with the First World War display of memorial crosses.

“A tremendous effort by everyone involved and very, very moving.”
