PEWSEY Primary School has been named in the Sunday Times list of top state schools in the South West.

The school, which has 200 pupils, came in at number ten in the list, which was published in the Parent Power supplement last weekend.

Headteacher Nicola Gilbert said: “I am delighted to be in the top ten. The children and the staff have worked really hard.

“Our school motto is, ‘We work best when we work together,’ and I think that has been key to us doing so well.

“The teachers work hard to make sure that their lessons are exciting, so the children look forward to coming into school. They are ready to learn and proud of the school and all that they achieve.

“We work closely with parents as well, because we can’t do it by ourselves – we need that support from home.

“We also have a fantastic team of governors behind us, who really care about the school and the children that come here.”

The school is making regular appearances in the Sunday Times, ranking 113 in a list of the top 200 state schools published by the national newspaper the previous week.

This new list reflects the number of pupils gaining level five or higher in maths and English at KS2.

Mrs Gilbert said: “There are 16,000 state primary schools in England so our ranking is a huge achievement. “It’s great recognition of the superb key stage two SATS results the children achieved. “We shared the news with the children in our assembly and enjoyed a congratulatory round of three cheers.”

The school outperformed all other schools in the Pewsey area, coming in the top four per cent of schools in the country.

In its last Ofsted inspection, in June 2012, the school achieved its highest ever marks and was rated as good.

Mrs Gilbert said: “The school is becoming more popular with prospective parents. We’ve recently had a new extension and grown from 150 pupils in 2010 to 200 now.

“Our results have improved considerably and we’re doing so much better than we were before.

“Year-on-year, we’re just getting better and better.”
