Wiltshire Council has launched its biggest ever parking review of towns throughout the county and people can now have their say by filling in a questionnaire.

Details of changes to fees and the designation of long and short stay car parks is included in the documents that are available to view at the link below.

In a number of towns it is proposed the price of staying for just one hour in both long and short stay car parks is set to rise.

In Devizes the council wants to make the Central, Sainsbury's and Narthgate car parks short stay only, capping the stay at thre hours.

The current 55p one hour stay at the Central car park, which is 13 per cent over capacity at peak times, will go up to 70p if the proposals are agreed.

In Chippenham the council proposes to raise an hour's parking at Bath Road from 80p to £1. At Sadlers Mead the one, two and three hour rates remain the same but longer stays will rise by up to 50p.

In Marlborough the 24-space car park at Savernake Hospital is earmarked for being leased or managed to or by a third party, marketing for sale or use by another council service.

Hilliers Yard and Polly Lane will become short stay car parks with a maximum of three hours instead of 24 and an hour rising from 55 to 60p. At George Lane an hour rises from 55p to 60p and the maxmum stay is capped at five hours. High Street parking charges stay the same.

In Royal Wootton Bassett the council proposes to make Borough Fields a short stay car park with a cap of three hours, instead of 24. It also proposes making the 30-space Wood Street car park permit only.

In Malmesbury there are no proposed changes at Station Rad but at Cross Hayes an hour and two hours will go up from 40 to 50p and £1.20 to £1.30.

In Calne at the 77-space Church Street car park, which the council says is at most only ever 30 per cent full, it is proposing to reduce the two-hour rate from £1.10 to 80p and the three-hour rate from £2 to £1.50.

In Trowbridge the council suggests introducing charges at St Stepehen's Place car park, which is currently free, to fund repairs and a revamp.

Lovemead car park, which is at the most only ever two-thirds full, will see 10p reductions across the board. There are also reduced hourly rates in Broad Street, Court Street and Church Street.

The King Street car park in Melksham would see hourly rates drop by 10p. The council says its peak occupancy is just 67 per cent.

In Corsham High Street, where peak demand exceeds capacity by more than a third, the one hour rate will go up by 10p and the maximum stay will be capped at three hours. At Post Office Lane the all day optuion will be scrapped but the eight-hour price drops from £5.60 to £5.20.

The council says the purpose of the review is to make sure all parking needs are best met.

A spokesman said: "The review focuses on car parking charges and management, with the potential use of new technologies and the future role of local communities.

"The review also covers other aspects such as parking standards, first hour free parking and other charging options.

"We are keen to hear the views of residents, stakeholders and other interested parties to help us shape the new strategy. The Council has made no decisions at this stage and would like to see how far you agree or disagree with the presented options, or alternatively suggest your own.

The consultation will be open from the 27th October 2014 to 5pm on the 16th January 2015.
