This is a repeat of a plea I made some years ago to my fellow motorists trying to navigate through the village of Market Lavington.

The village has evolved over a period of several hundred years, long before the birth of the motor car.

As such, its roads are not equipped to handle the volume of parked cars and traffic of today.

At certain times of the day, parked cars line most of Church Street and the High Street, making it impossible to know what is coming the other way.

Therefore, when passing through towards Easterton, you have to overtake the parked cars on the wrong side of the road without being able to see what is coming.

Most people understand that relatively simple concept, and will drive through the village carefully, and thoughtfully.

They even give up their right of way to allow traffic to move freely through a very tricky situation.

However, we still have the die-hard militants who will not loosen their grip on their precious right of way to the point where they will cause a traffic jam, drive on the pavement, or hit the oncoming car, as happened to me recently.

The Highway Code is undeniable. We know the rules, and we know that right of way belongs to the vehicle travelling on the correct side of the road.

But surely, when faced with the challenge that is Market Lavington (this must apply to other villages too), a little common sense can be applied and allowances made for those of us unable to see around corners and through parked cars.

Just a thought to those unable to give up their right of way – you may find yourself facing the same problem on your return trip...
