Photographer Nick Upton has been awarded best Documentary Series at the British Wildlife Photography Awards after capturing images of hazel dormice.

Mr Upton, 55, from Kingsdown, Corsham beat off other entries in the national competition to take the crown for his six images of the animals at a conservation woodland in North Somerset.

The images captured tell the story of the dormouse at the woodland being weighed and looked after in the habitat Mr Upton said: “They are a beautiful ginger colour and drop dead gorgeous little creatures.”

He will be att the award ceremony in London this week to receive his prize of Canon camera equipment. He said: “I was gobsmacked and surprised. What stood out for the judges was that it was clearly telling a story.”

Mr Upton, who has over 25 years of experience working in wildlife film and photography, has worked with the likes of David Attenborough.

He saidd: “It’s a job I have a great time doing, inspiring people to take an interest and I’m having a ball getting the chance to see these lovely animals.”
