About 20,000 people are expected to converge on Westonbirt Arboretum this weekend to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the woodland attraction’s popular Treefest.

Westonbirt’s signature three-day summer event will involve a huge range of largely outdoor activities, from archery and tree climbing to a food festival and zip wire rides.

The emphasis at the internationally renowned woodland will be connecting with trees, and some new events have been added to mark the festival’s 20-year landmark.

These will include a project teaching youngsters how to build their own dens, after learning about the importance of such structures and what materials are required to make them.

A variety of craft activities – such as making woodland creatures and bird masks – will also be laid on during the bank holiday jamboree that opened yesterday and runs until tomorrow.

It will culminate in a special birthday parade tomorrow at 3.15pm, featuring tree flags, puppets and woodland crowns – all hand-made by visiting youngsters.

Tractors, brass bands and a steam engine will lead the parade to commemorate the anniversary.

The newly named Westonbirt at Work exhibitors’ area will this year illustrate “the journey of wood” to visitors through guided walks around the area. Some 120 exhibitors will be showcasing their wares.

The programme and information is at www.forestry.
