A year after the launch of police crackdown on drugs and yobs in Marlborough town centre, police say they are seeing some success.

Acting Sgt David Tippetts launched Operation Banning last June, to tackle drug-related crime and anti-social behaviour.

Since then there has been a 34 per cent drop in anti-social behaviour, one of 18 per cent in violent behaviour and of 15 per cent in criminal damage.

Sgt Tippetts said: “It would appear the action we have taken has done what we intended.”

More than 70 offences have been recorded, from possession of class C drugs to possession of class A drugs with intent to supply. There have been six prosecutions, with sentences ranging from six months suspended to 150 hours of unpaid work.

Sgt Tippetts said: “It’s proved a resounding success. I’m certainly pleased with the result.”

Young people found to have cannabis grinders or bags with drug residue attended workshops at the George Lane Police Station, run in conjunction with integrated youth workers.

Of those who attended these early intervention workshops, only one has been involved with the police since.

Sgt Tippetts said: “I think that is the most pleasing thing to come out of the operation, because crime prevention is the most important thing.

“That’s what we’re here to do; prevent young people from being involved in crime.”

The operation will continue and police are keen for people to get in touch if they have information about drug activity.

Sgt Tippetts said: “We rely on community intelligence, particularly for warrants, so anyone who has information let us know and we’ll act on it.”

Anyone with information can call 101 or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555111.
