Mr Cooper (June 5) clearly didn’t read my previous letter (May 29). What I said was: “.... such as when a cyclist exits from a side road without stopping at the junction, accelerating round him/her may well avoid the collision which would be inevitable if there’s insufficient braking space.”

I wasn’t referring to ‘overtaking’ a cyclist, which is quite different and doesn’t justify exceeding the speed limit. Mr Cooper’s assertions in this respect are quite correct.

For his benefit, I do not speed and do not condone speeding. I’m actually involved in a Community Speed Watch for that very reason.
