So where has all the wildlife gone on the River Kennet in Marlborough?
At this time of year it is usually noisy and lively with masses of ducks with their duckings.
This year I have seen one duck with one duckling, a couple of coots and, worst of all, one lone swan!
We are all missing them. It is one of the pleasures of Marlborough to have a plenty of wildlife on the river in the centre of the town.
Even the visitors are affected. An American walked down to the river near Waitrose car park with his camera.
When he got there there was nothing to photograph. It was empty. Not a single duck.
I have seen children dashing down to see the ducks but, after looking at the empty river, rushing back to tell their parents that there were no ducks.
“Don’t be silly,” they replied. “There are always ducks here.” Sadly they were wrong.
Their children saw no ducks that day.
I hope things will improve next year, and everyone will do everything it takes to bring the river back to life, so we can all enjoy it again.
